2021-05-16 THE REWARDS OF OBEDIENCE – by Calvin Bergsma, Pastor Georgetown Christian Fellowship.mp4

This message is a challenge to not lose heart as you ask and then wait for God to help you in the struggles of life. God’s blessing will surely come if we obey what he tells us to do!
The Psalmist David understood trouble but had faith that God would come to his aid. In Psalm 27:13-14, he wrote. “I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord In the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the Lord.” David trusted God’s goodness and believed that He would surely bring help and blessing though he experienced great trouble. In Psalm 19:7-11 David reminds us that ‘THE WAY TO BLESSING AND REWARD, IS THE PATH OF OBEDIENCE.’

There is a powerful story in the Bible in 2 Kings chapter 5 of how God healed Naaman from leprosy. In this story, there are two important lessons that those who come to God with their problems we need to learn. It is not just that God ‘rewards of obedience’ but also that our ‘expectations can hinder receiving’ the blessing we are asking for.

#1. We often expect an immediate reward for our obedience or good behavior and feel slighted if we do not see it immediately. We tend to be impatient and very short-sighted. But God is patient, as we wait for Him to answer our prayers and even wonder if He is hearing them, He is setting the stage for that which we have asked. It is necessary to obey his instructions and then exercise faith as we wait for His help.

#2. Some of us have walls in our life that need to come down, walls that may be hindering the blessing we desire. You will notice that God first addressed Naaman’s deeper more debilitating problem before fixing what Naaman believed was his primary problem. (In his case – spiritual pride) God often sends the answer to our problems. through a person OR in a way we do not want to receive it. But in doing so, He shows us a deeper spiritual problem the very thing that may be standing in the way of receiving the blessing we desire.
